Zermatt: a guided first 4000er on the Breithorn, then a bed at the Hörnlihütte

- 6:15 am1Bayard Sport: boots, crampons, harness, ice axeZermatt
Reserve the kit online the week before and it is bagged and waiting; walk in cold in August and there are no size 45 boots left. Around CHF 55 for the full set for the day. Your own broken-in hiking boots will not take a crampon — this is the item people try to skip and cannot.
15 min by train or taxi · 9.3 km - 7 am2Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: Zermatt → Trockener Steg → Klein MatterhornZermatt
About CHF 120 return, halved with a Swiss Travel Pass or Half Fare Card, and it delivers you to 3883 m — the highest cable car station in Europe, and higher than the summit you are about to climb starts from. Take the first departures: afternoon snow on the Breithorn plateau turns to slush and the guides want you down by early afternoon anyway.
16 min walk · 1.2 km - 8:15 am3Breithorn half traverse with a Zermatters guideZermatt
A private guide through Zermatters or Alpin Center runs roughly CHF 800 to 1200 for the day; a group departure with kit included is around CHF 240 per person if you can join one. Technically it is a snow plod — but it is a glacier plod at 4000 m with crevasses under the trail and no fitness reference most people have. The half traverse adds the ridge line over the western summit and is worth asking for. Roughly 90 minutes up from the Klein Matterhorn tunnel exit if you are moving well.
8 min by train or taxi · 2.7 km - 11:40 am4Back across the plateau and the lift to Trockener StegZermatt
Included in the morning's ticket. Take the crampons off inside the tunnel, not on the platform — the floor is polished ice and everyone learns this the same way.
14 min walk · 1.0 km - 12:50 pm5Lunch on the Gandegghütte terraceZermatt
Twenty minutes' walk from Trockener Steg on a marked path, which is why almost nobody on the cable car goes. Family-run, huge portions, and the terrace looks straight down the Theodul glacier at the Matterhorn's east face. Cash is easiest.
8 min by train or taxi · 3.3 km - 2:10 pm6Down to Furi, across to the Schwarzsee gondolaZermatt
You have to come back down to Furi and change lines — there is no link across at altitude, and the connection eats 40 minutes people forget to budget. Last gondola down from Schwarzsee is around 17:00 in summer, which does not matter tonight but matters enormously tomorrow.
8 min by train or taxi · 5.0 km - 3:15 pm7Schwarzsee to the HörnlihütteZermatt
About 600 m of climbing over 90 minutes to two hours on a good path with a couple of cabled sections near the top. It is exposed to weather with nowhere to shelter — turn round at the chapel if there is thunder forecast, this ridge collects lightning. The hut appears only in the last five minutes.
12 min by train or taxi · 7.3 km - 5 pm8Hörnlihütte: half board at 3260 mZermatt
From about CHF 150 per person half board, CHF 50 deposit, and the guides book it a year out — four weeks ahead is the realistic minimum for a bed and you should expect to be turned away in August. Bring a sleeping bag liner or buy one at reception for CHF 43. Dinner is at 18:00, lights out early, and the Matterhorn parties are woken at 03:30 and gone by 04:15 — you will hear all of it, which is most of the point of staying.
