Machu Picchu done properly: the 04:20 queue and Huayna Picchu

- 4:20 am1Get in the bus queue on Avenida Hermanos AyarAguas Calientes
The queue does not form at the bus stop — it forms along Hermanos Ayar, the road parallel to the river, and by 04:45 in high season it is several hundred people. 04:20 puts you in the first four or five buses. Buy the bus ticket the night before at the Consettur office on Avenida Pachacutec so you are queueing, not transacting. Headlamp, poncho, and the passport you booked the entry with.
12 min walk · 900 m - 5:30 am2First bus up the Hiram Bingham switchbacksAguas Calientes
Buses start at 05:30 and run every five to ten minutes; 25 minutes and 13 switchbacks up. Price is the round trip — keep the return half, it is a separate coupon and they will not reissue it. Sit on the right going up.
- 6:05 am3Hire a licensed guide at the control gateMachu Picchu
A guide is required for a first entry and they wait at the gate in official vests with a laminated licence — this is the honest, cheap way to do it: join a group of eight to ten forming for your circuit and split it. Say up front you have a 07:00 Huayna Picchu slot so the guide paces the royal sector and lets you go at 06:55.
- 6:15 am4Circuit 3-A: the lower royal sectorMachu Picchu
Buy route 3-A specifically — it is the ONLY ticket that includes Huayna Picchu, and it is Circuit 3 (Realeza), not the postcard Circuit 2. Sold on the government portal tuboleto.cultura.pe, 400 places a day, and it goes 30-plus days out for peak dates. Ordinary circuits get a 30-minute grace period; mountain routes get none — the printed hour is the hour. Circuit 3 walks the lower town: the Water Mirrors, the House of the Inka, the Temple of the Condor. The classic postcard framing is Circuit 2's, so accept you are trading it for the climb.
- 7 am5Huayna Picchu and the Gran Caverna loopMachu Picchu
Sign the register at the Huayna Picchu gate — they check you back out and they do come looking. Roughly an hour of wet stone stairs up, cables on the last section, and a squeeze through the tunnel below the summit. If you have any hesitation about exposure, the Huchuy Picchu option on the same circuit is 45 minutes and almost the same view of the citadel. Add the Gran Caverna / Templo de la Luna descent on the far side if your legs are good: two extra hours, and you will have it to yourselves.
- 10:45 am6Bus back down to Aguas CalientesMachu Picchu
The downhill queue at 10:45 is ten minutes; at 13:00 it is forty. Re-entry is not allowed, so eat and drink before you leave the site — there is nothing inside beyond the gate cafe.
- 12 pm7Lunch at Indio FelizAguas Calientes
Aguas Calientes food is mostly a tout with a laminated menu; this French-Peruvian place off the main drag has been the exception for twenty years. Uncommitted because if the mountain took longer than planned you skip it and go straight to the station — the trout at the station cafe is fine.
- 2:30 pm8Vistadome back to OllantaytamboAguas Calientes
Board 30 minutes early — the platform is a single file past a ticket check and it backs up. Sit on the left going down for the Urubamba. Book the return before the entry ticket if you are tight on dates: afternoon trains sell out before Machu Picchu circuits do. The Expedition service is $30-40 cheaper for the same track and the same time.
