Watkins Glen: the gorge uphill at opening, then three tastings on the east side

- 9 am1Gorge Trail uphill from the Main EntranceWatkins Glen
Everyone tells you to shuttle to the Upper Entrance and walk down. Ignore them: walking up from Main puts all nineteen falls in front of you instead of behind, and the Spiral Tunnel and the suspension bridge both read better from below. Two miles, 832 stone steps, about 400 feet of climb — an hour if you march, two if you stop, and you will stop. The $10 is per vehicle, not per person, and includes the pool. Hold, not planned: the gorge trail is a seasonal trail, roughly mid-May to mid-October depending on the weather, and it closes on short notice for ice and rockfall. The stone is permanently wet under the falls — no smooth soles. The main lot fills by 10:00 on an October Saturday. CHECK BEFORE YOU GO (verified 2026-09-06 against parks.ny.gov): the main tunnel entrance and Sentry Bridge at the start of the Gorge Trail have been closed for construction, with reopening anticipated for summer 2026 — which is the exact stretch this day's 'walk up from Main' depends on. If it is still shut, the day inverts: shuttle up and walk down. Park fee is $10 per VEHICLE, not per person, and pedestrians and cyclists enter free.
3 min walk · 0 m - 11:25 am2Park shuttle back down, Upper Entrance to MainWatkins Glen
$6 per person one way, $1 for under-10s, loops all three entrances every 20–30 minutes. Daily in high summer, weekends only from the week after Labor Day to close, which is exactly when you want it. If it is not running, the Indian Trail rim path gets you back down in about 35 minutes with none of the views — fine, just not a second helping. Verified 2026-09-06: weekends only 23 May–27 June, daily 28 June–7 September, weekends again 8 September to close in mid-October.
8 min by train or taxi · 5.0 km - 12 pm3Lunch at Nickel's Pit BBQ before the driver arrivesWatkins Glen
Eat something solid now. Three tastings on an empty stomach is how people end their afternoon at winery two, and there is nothing on the 414 stretch between Hector and Lodi that will save you.
3 min walk · 200 m - 1:15 pm4Designated driver picks up at the Harbor Hotel — five hoursWatkins Glen
Main Street Drivers and Finger Lakes Designated Drivers both start around $50/hour and drive your car, which is cheaper and far less annoying than a bus tour with strangers and a fixed winery list. Five hours is the right block: three tastings at 414 spacing, plus the run back. Book it a week out for a Saturday in October; harvest weekend, book it in August. This is the single biggest line on the day and it is worth every dollar — the alternative is one person tasting nothing.
18 min by train or taxi · 11 km - 1:45 pm5Forge Cellars — a flight in the SalonHector
East side, Route 414: this is the side with the dry Rieslings and the serious Pinot Noir, and it faces the afternoon sun across the water. The Salon flight is five wines for $23 with no reservation, which is why it fits an afternoon. The deeper guided tasting is a separate thing in the Summer House and is reservation-only, so if you want that one, book it and start the day with wine and end with the gorge instead. Verified 2026-09-06 (forgecellars.com/visit, /salon, /tastings): open Friday and Saturday 11:30–18:30 and Sunday 12:00–17:00, closed Monday through Thursday — so this entire Route 414 afternoon only exists on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The Salon needs no reservation; the Summer House tastings do (twelve seats, arranged by email). Tasting prices were not re-verified.
16 min by train or taxi · 16 km - 3:20 pm6Boundary Breaks — Riesling and nothing elseLodi
A house that makes Riesling in a dozen dryness levels and almost nothing else, which makes it the one tasting where you actually learn something instead of drifting through six varieties. Ask them to pour the dry #239 against a late-harvest so you can feel the range. Verified 2026-09-06 (boundarybreaks.com/tasting-room): open seven days a week year-round 11:00–17:00, closing only New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas — and they take no reservations at all. Tastings are first come, first served, with a maximum party size of six, so a group of seven or more cannot be booked around; split it or go elsewhere. This stop’s kind was changed from booked to planned on that basis. Tasting fees around Seneca are typically waived on a bottle purchase of roughly $30 or more; ask before you pay.
21 min walk · 1.6 km - 4:40 pm7Wagner Vineyards, and the brewery on the same siteLodi
Marked idea on purpose: three tastings is the honest maximum and this is the one to drop. If the gorge ran long, or Forge held you, skip it without regret. It stays on the list because Wagner has Wagner Valley Brewing on the same property, so the person who has been pacing themselves gets a beer instead of a fourth Riesling, and the octagonal cellar is a genuinely good building.
- 6:15 pm8Dinner at Graft Wine + Cider BarWatkins Glen
The by-the-glass list is the region read sideways — small producers who do not have a tasting room you could have visited today. Reserve on a race weekend or a foliage Saturday; Watkins Glen has about six places to eat and all of them know it.
