Skaneateles: a swim off Clift Park, then three hours on the mailboat

- 8:30 am1Coffee on Genesee Street before the village wakes upSkaneateles
Parking in the village is free but two-hour limited on Genesee, and by 11:00 in July there is none. Park once, early, on a side street off Jordan and walk everything after that.
18 min by train or taxi · 11 km - 9:20 am2Swim off the pier at Clift ParkSkaneateles
Free, right in the middle of the village, and the water is startling — Skaneateles is Syracuse's unfiltered drinking supply, which is why the rules about dogs and boats near shore are enforced and why you can see the bottom at fifteen feet. There is no lifeguard at the pier; the guarded beach is next door at the Village Beach and charges non-residents. Hold, because a north wind makes this end of the lake choppy and cold even in July.
17 min by train or taxi · 11 km - 10:50 am3Genesee Street end to endSkaneateles
Four blocks, no chains, and it takes an hour only because you stop. Uncommitted on purpose — if the swim was good, stay in the water instead.
12 min walk · 900 m - 12:05 pm4Doug's Fish FrySkaneateles
Order at the counter, carry your own tray, and do not be put off by the line — it moves faster than any table service in the village. Get the fish sandwich rather than the dinner: same fish, half the price, and you are getting on a boat in twenty-five minutes.
3 min walk · 50 m - 1:30 pm5The mailboat — three hours delivering to the campsSkaneateles
The Barbara S. Wiles is one of the last boats in the country still delivering actual US Mail, to camps with no road access, and the delivery is the entertainment — a teenager hangs off the rail and hands mail across a moving gap forty times. It runs July 1 to the Tuesday after Labor Day only, so this day does not exist in June. Three hours; if that is too much boat, the one-hour sightseeing cruise is $27 adult and $17 child. Sit port side outbound for the shade and the shoreline. Book ahead in August. Verified 2026-09-06 (midlakesnavigation.com, Visit Syracuse): mail delivery runs 1 July to the Tuesday after Labor Day, and the wider cruise season is roughly mid-May through Columbus Day, so the June warning holds. The 13:30 departure in this day is NOT verified — Mid-Lakes sets sailing times per season, so confirm the time when you book on 315-685-8500 and expect the rest of the afternoon to move with it.
17 min walk · 1.3 km - 4:40 pm6West Lake Road up the hillSkaneateles
Ten minutes out of the village and 400 feet up. This is the view of the lake people photograph, and it is not from the village.
9 min by train or taxi · 5.4 km - 5:05 pm7Anyela's Vineyards for the view down the lakeSkaneateles
The only vineyard on Skaneateles, and honestly the view is the better half of what you are buying — the wine is fine, the terrace at 18:00 in July is not. Weekends have live music and a crowd; a weekday is the whole hillside to yourself.
10 min by train or taxi · 6.5 km - 6:45 pm8Dinner at the KrebsSkaneateles
Open since 1899 and the most expensive thing in this day by a factor of three — worth it once, and the reason this day still lands under $150. Reserve; the upstairs bar takes walk-ins and does a shorter menu if you did not. Verified 2026-09-06: the Krebs runs a season from late May to about 1 November and serves dinner Wednesday to Saturday 17:00–22:00 only — Sunday is an 11:00–15:00 brunch with no dinner service, and it is shut Monday and Tuesday. Since the mailboat only delivers 1 July to the Tuesday after Labor Day, the version of this day with both in it is a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday in July or August; on a Sunday or Monday dinner has to move somewhere else in the village.
