The day, as they ran it
  1. 6:15 am1
Coffee and a breakfast burrito in Springdale before anything opensSpringdale

Open at 06:00, and the only reliable caffeine before the park gate. Eat here — Zion Canyon has exactly one food service (the Lodge) and it does not open early.

8 min by train or taxi · 2.5 km
  2. 6:50 am2
Springdale line shuttle to the pedestrian entranceSpringdale

Do not drive to the visitor center — the lot is full by 07:30 in spring and the whole plan dies there. The town line is free and drops you at the footbridge; walk through the entrance station and you are at Zion Canyon shuttle stop 1. The cost here is the $35 vehicle entrance pass, seven days, bought once for the trip. Non-US visitors 16+ now pay a $100 per-person surcharge on top at Zion.

  3. 7:15 am3
First Zion Canyon shuttle to The Grotto (stop 6)Zion National Park

In spring the first shuttle out of the visitor center is 07:00 — this is the whole trick of the day. Be in that line by 06:50 and you reach the chains before the switchback traffic. The Grotto is stop 6, seven stops and about 25 minutes up canyon.

  4. 7:45 am4
Angels Landing: West Rim Trail, Walter's Wiggles, the chainsZion National Park

You cannot do this without a permit. Two lotteries on Recreation.gov: the seasonal one (spring hikes open 13 Feb, close 25 Feb, awarded 26 Feb — the other seasons open 1 Apr, 1 Jul, 1 Oct) and the day-before lottery, which takes applications from 00:01 until 15:00 Mountain the day before and notifies by 16:00. $6 per application, non-refundable whether you win or not, plus $3 per person if you do. One application per person, up to six names. Cost here is one application plus two permits. Print or screenshot the permit — there is no cell signal at the chains and a ranger does check at Scout Lookout.

  5. 12 pm5
Lunch on the lawn at Zion Lodge (stop 5)Zion National Park

One stop back down from The Grotto. Order at the window, eat under the cottonwoods, refill both bottles here — it is the last potable water before the river.

  6. 1 pm6
Shuttle up to Temple of Sinawava (stop 9)Zion National Park

End of the road. Change into the dry suit at the trailhead restrooms, not in the parking lot in Springdale — you will cook on the shuttle otherwise.

  7. 1:30 pm7
The Narrows bottom-up: Riverside Walk to Wall StreetZion National Park

Held, not booked, because the river decides. The park closes the Narrows above 150 cfs and after any flash flood watch — check the flow on the visitor center board that morning before you commit to the rental. No permit needed from the bottom; go up as far as Wall Street (about 2.5 miles past the end of the paved Riverside Walk) and turn around, which is four hours of walking in water. Cost is two Narrows dry-suit packages from Zion Adventure Company in Springdale at $75 each — suit, canyoneering boots, neoprene socks and a stick. Pick the gear up the evening before; the morning queue eats the shuttle you need. In April the water is around 50°F and the suit is not optional.

  8. 6:30 pm8
Dinner at Bit & Spur, and the legs finally stopSpringdale

Walkable from most Springdale motels, which matters after this day. No reservations for two most nights — put your name in and drink something on the patio.
