The day, as they ran it
  1. 7:30 am1
Menemen and çay on Divanyolu before anything opensIstanbul

Do the buying the night before, not now: Topkapı and Hagia Sophia both sell timed tickets through the official Turkish Museums portal, and the queue in Sultanahmet is the ticket window, never the gate. With a QR code on your phone you walk straight to the security line. Also check what day it is — Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays and Hagia Sophia shuts to visitors for Friday congregational prayer, so Tuesday and Friday both break this day. Verified 2026-09-06: Topkapı is closed every Tuesday (and on the first day of Ramazan and Kurban Bayramı), and Hagia Sophia's visitor gallery is shut roughly 12:00-14:30 on Fridays for congregational prayer — Tuesday and Friday both break this day.

Topkapı Palace and the Harem, at the Imperial Gate for openingIstanbul

This is the inversion the day is built on. Everyone starts at Hagia Sophia because it is the famous one; Topkapı is the one with the bottleneck, because the Harem and the Treasury are narrow rooms in single file and the queue for the Harem forms from about 10:30 and never clears. Be at the gate at 08:45 for the 09:00 opening and walk it backwards from what the signs suggest — Harem first, then the Treasury, then the Fourth Courtyard terraces over the Bosphorus, and back out through the courtyards against the incoming crowd. The Harem stopped being a separate ticket in 2024; one combined ticket now covers the palace, the Harem and Hagia Irene, so nobody needs to sell you an upgrade at the door. Verified 2026-09-06: opening is 09:00; closing is 18:30 with last entry 17:30 from April to October, and 17:30 with last entry 16:30 from November to March. Closed Tuesdays. The combined Palace + Harem + Hagia Irene ticket is confirmed at 2,750 TL for foreign visitors with the audio guide included, and the ticket office takes cards or İstanbulkart only — it does not take cash.

  3. 11:30 am3
Hagia Sophia's upper gallery, in the gap before noonIstanbul

It is a working mosque, so the ground floor is for worship and your ticket buys the upper gallery — which is where the Byzantine mosaics are, so this is not the consolation prize. Two things nobody tells you at the door: the visitors' entrance is a separate door on the north side, not the one the congregation uses, and tourist access pauses for each of the five daily prayers. On Fridays it is shut to visitors roughly noon to 14:30, which is why this stop sits before twelve. Shoulders and knees covered for everyone, a scarf for women — they hand out scarves but the queue for them is its own queue. Verified 2026-09-06: visitor hours are 08:00-19:00 April-October (from 09:00 in winter), the ticket office closes at 18:30 and the upper-gallery ticket is €25. Tourist access does pause for each of the five daily prayers, and on Fridays the gallery is closed to visitors from about 12:00 to 14:30. This 11:30-12:30 window therefore works on every day except Friday, when it is impossible as written and the whole day has to move — the first stop already says so, and it is the same warning as the Tuesday one for Topkapı. On other days the constraint is the midday prayer, which falls after this window in September.

Köfte, piyaz and şalgam, standing room onlyIstanbul

The original is at Divanyolu No. 12 and there are four near-identical signs on the same three hundred metres trading on the name — check for 'Selim Usta' and the 1920 date. The menu is meatballs, white bean salad, pickled turnip juice and rice pudding, and asking for anything else marks you out. Twenty minutes, cash, and you are back on the street.

  5. 1:45 pm5
The Basilica Cistern with a timed slotIstanbul

Run separately from the state museums since its restoration, so it is not on the museum pass and needs its own timed ticket. Two practical things: the two Medusa heads are at the far end on the left, past the point where most people turn round, and the evening ticket costs more, is darker for photographs and is busier because it is the one the hotels push. It is cold down there in every season. Verified 2026-09-06: the day session runs 09:00-18:30 and a separate night session 19:30-22:00, with the cistern shut between the two for the changeover; the day ticket for foreign visitors is 1,950 TL (2,150 TL with audio guide), so the model estimate on this stop is low. The night session has been suspended at times — check it is running before anyone buys an evening ticket.

The Blue Mosque between afternoon prayersIstanbul

Free, so there is nothing to book and nobody to buy a skip-the-line from — anyone offering one is selling you a guide. The visitors' door is on the Hippodrome side, not the grand courtyard everybody photographs, and it closes for about ninety minutes around each prayer, which in practice means turning up between calls and being flexible about which. Shoe bags at the door, bare feet on the carpet, and the İznik tile that gives it the name is up in the gallery arches, not at eye level. Verified 2026-09-06: visiting hours are about 08:30 until half an hour before the evening prayer, with the mosque closed to visitors for each of the five daily prayers and on Friday until roughly 14:30. The dress code described here is enforced at the door: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, a headscarf for women, shoes off.

Kese and köpük at Çemberlitaş, Sinan's 1584 hammamIstanbul

Book the plain traditional service — the scrub with the kese mitt and the olive-oil foam wash — and refuse the oil-massage add-ons at the desk, which triple the price for a fifteen-minute rub. Late afternoon is the trick: coach groups fill both chambers between eleven and two and the marble göbektaşı is elbow-to-elbow, whereas at five you may have it. Men's and women's sections are separate and both are the original 1584 rooms, which is not true of every 'historic' hammam in the district. Bring cash for the tip; it goes to your natır directly and is not on the bill. Verified 2026-09-06: open daily 06:00-24:00, so a 16:15 slot is never a closing-time problem; the plain traditional kese-and-foam service is about 2,650 TL and self-service entry about 2,100 TL. Online booking takes a deposit and the balance is settled at the hamam.

Künefe at Hafız Mustafa, walking backIstanbul

Uncommitted — it is on the way and it is open late, so it survives a day that overran. The Hamidiye branch near Sirkeci has upstairs seating; the Divanyolu one is a takeaway counter with a queue out of the door. Order the künefe hot and eat it there, not the boxed lokum, which costs three times what the same thing costs at the Mısır Çarşısı.
