   Nothing else in Fira is open at this hour and there is no water, no shade and no shop between Imerovigli and Oia. Buy two litres here as well as the coffee — this is the last chance for four hours.

   The trail leaves from behind the cable-car station on Ypapantis. This first hour is paved, flat-ish and lined with hotel terraces — it is not the walk, it is the warm-up, so do not judge the day by it.

   Down onto Skaros Rock while the light is still lowImerovigli

   Everyone does Skaros at sunset and then walks the loose scramble back up in the dark. Do it now: same rock, same caldera, nobody on it, and the chapel of Theoskepasti on the far side is worth the extra ten minutes. Twenty minutes down, thirty back up.

   Imerovigli to Oia — the rough halfImerovigli

   This is where the day is won or lost. Loose volcanic scree, two long climbs, zero shade and zero water. If you are past Imerovigli after 10:00 in summer you have made a mistake — in April it is fine until noon. Trainers slide; wear something with a lug.

   Lunch off the main lane at MelitiniOia

   Small plates, no reservations, and a queue from 13:00 — arriving sweaty at 12:30 is the whole advantage of having walked. Hold the slot loosely; if there is a line, Karma two doors down is the same idea without the wait.

6. 2 pm6

   KTEL bus back to FiraOia

   Runs roughly every 30 minutes, cash to the conductor on board, and it is standing room after 16:00. Going back now rather than at 18:00 means you skip the sunset-bound scrum entirely.

   Oia's castle fills ninety minutes before the sun goes and then applauds. The path north of Imerovigli looks at the same sun setting into the same caldera, with Skaros in silhouette in the foreground, and there will be twenty people rather than three thousand. Arrive fifteen minutes ahead, not ninety.

   Book for after sunset, not during it — the caldera-view tables cost double at 20:00 and the food is the same at 20:40. Confirm by phone the afternoon of; unconfirmed holds get released in season.
