Hobbiton first, then the ground that steams

- 7:30 am1Breakfast at Okere Falls StoreRotorua
Twenty minutes out of town on the Tauranga road and worth the detour if you are heading north anyway — a general store with a garden bar, a serious beer list for later in the day, and the Kaituna river rapids five minutes' walk away. In town, Ciabatta Bakery opens earlier and does the pastry version of this.
27 min by train or taxi · 60 km - 8:30 am2Drive to Matamata, straight to the Shire's RestMatamata
Drive to the farm, not to the town. Tours depart from the Shire's Rest on Buckland Road, about 10 minutes outside Matamata; the i-SITE in town is only a pick-up point for people without a car and sending yourself there costs you 20 minutes. Cost here is the day's fuel out of Rotorua and back. Roads are rural and the fog sits in these valleys until nine in winter. Verified 2026-09-06: tours do depart from the Shire's Rest, 501 Buckland Road, Hinuera - but it is about a 20-minute drive from Matamata township, not 10, so leave the margin. Shire's Rest departures run every 30 minutes from 09:30 to 16:00; the Matamata i-SITE version leaves every 45 minutes from 09:30 to 15:30 and is a four-hour trip because it includes the coach both ways.
8 min by train or taxi · 1.7 km - 10 am3The Hobbiton tour, and a pint at the Green DragonMatamata
Around NZ$130, two and a half hours, guided the whole way — you cannot wander it alone. Departures run every 30 minutes from 09:30 to 16:00 and summer sells out a fortnight ahead, so book, and book an early slot: the set faces the morning sun and the 10:00 group is a third the size of the 13:00. There are no toilets on the set itself for the two hours. It rains here and the tour does not stop for it, so take a jacket rather than an umbrella. The drink at the Green Dragon at the end is included — the ginger beer is the one to get if you are driving, and the Evening Banquet Tour is the upgrade if you would rather eat there than in Rotorua. Verified 2026-09-06: the Signature Tour from the Shire's Rest is 2.5 hours, not 2 - this window has been extended and the rest of the afternoon pushed back accordingly - and the adult fare was NZ$130 as at 25 August 2026. A bus takes you from the Shire's Rest car park onto the set; no cars go in. Advance booking is strongly recommended, particularly in school holidays, weekends and the summer peak.
21 min walk · 1.6 km - 12:40 pm4Lunch at the Shire's RestMatamata
Perfectly decent farm cafe food at the departure building, which saves driving into Matamata hungry. If you would rather eat in town, the Redoubt Bar and Eatery on Broadway is the local choice and is ten minutes away.
56 min by train or taxi · 56 km - 1:25 pm5Back to the thermal beltRotorua
An hour back, and the smell tells you when you have arrived — hydrogen sulphide, everywhere, and you stop noticing it by dinner. Wai-O-Tapu is a further 25 minutes south of the city on SH5, so do not drive into town first and then back out; go straight past the turnoff.
27 min by train or taxi · 27 km - 2:45 pm6Wai-O-Tapu: Champagne Pool and the Artist's PaletteRotorua
About 40 dollars for a 3 km loop of boardwalks over ground that is orange, green and violently green. Skip the Lady Knox Geyser: it goes off at 10:15 every morning because a ranger drops soap into it, it does not fit a Hobbiton morning, and it is the least interesting thing here. Stay on the boardwalks — the crust is thin and people have gone through it. Champagne Pool steams hardest on a cold afternoon, which makes winter the better season for photographs. Te Puia in town is the alternative if you want the Pohutu geyser and a Maori cultural centre in one ticket. Verified 2026-09-06: Wai-O-Tapu is open seven days 08:30-16:30 with LAST ADMISSION AT 15:00, closed only on Christmas Day, and the Lady Knox soaping is 10:15 daily as described. That last-admission time is what forces the shape of this afternoon: with a 2.5-hour Hobbiton tour you arrive here about 14:45 and have fifteen minutes of slack. Miss 15:00 and the day's second half is gone.
17 min by train or taxi · 17 km - 4:30 pm7Redwoods Treewalk at duskRotorua
Suspension bridges strung between 117-year-old Californian redwoods, 20 m up. The nightlights version with David Trubridge's lanterns is the one to buy and it starts at dusk, which in a Rotorua winter is barely five o'clock — check the day's start time when you buy, because in midsummer it is not dark until nine and the day ticket is the better deal then. The forest floor walking tracks underneath are free and excellent if you would rather not pay. Verified 2026-09-06: the Treewalk opens daily at 09:00 and closes about 21:00 in winter and midnight in midsummer, and Nightlights starts 20 minutes after sunset - which in September is around 18:20, i.e. after the Te Pa Tu pick-up. Take the day walk here and the hangi in the evening, or move Nightlights to another night. From 1 September 2026 booking a specific date and time for Nightlights is strongly recommended.
15 min by train or taxi · 9.6 km - 6:30 pm8Hangi and a powhiri at Te Pa TuRotorua
Around 180 dollars for a four-hour evening in the forest: a powhiri welcome, performance, and a hangi lifted out of the earth oven in front of you. They collect from Rotorua hotels around 17:45 to 18:15 depending where you are staying, so the pick-up, not the start time, is what you plan around — confirm yours when you book. Go in with some manners about it: it is a welcome onto a marae-style space, they will ask your group to nominate a chief, and taking that seriously makes the night. Book at least a few days out in summer.
