Bondi to Coogee at dawn, Surry Hills after dark

- 6:50 am1First swim of the day in the Icebergs poolSydney
Ten dollars at the turnstile, and it buys you the pool before the photographers arrive around nine. Two things to know: the pool closes all day Thursday for cleaning, and on a big south swell the sea breaks straight over the end wall, which is thrilling if you were expecting it and alarming if you were not. Swim laps in the 50 m, then get out — the day is long. Lockers take coins. Verified 2026-09-06: the Thursday cleaning closure is real (the club notes it may open on summer Thursdays when the tides allow), pool hours are 06:00-18:30 Mon-Fri and 06:30-18:30 weekends, and adult entry is A$10 with towel or locker hire A$5 each, so this 06:50 slot is inside opening hours on any day but Thursday.
14 min by train or taxi · 8.7 km - 7:45 am2Coffee and a bacon roll on Hall StreetSydney
Eat before the walk, not after. There is precisely one good coffee between Bondi and Coogee — the Bronte kiosks — and it always has a queue twelve deep by nine. Two blocks back from the sand on Hall Street the prices drop by a third and the seats exist. Fill a water bottle here too; the bubblers along the path work but they are warm.
10 min by train or taxi · 6.3 km - 8:30 am3Walk south: Bondi to Tamarama to Bronte, swim at Bronte BathsSydney
Walk it north to south. The six kilometres are the same either way, but southbound the morning sun is behind you rather than in the lens, the climbs are shorter, and you end at Coogee where the bus back to the city runs every ten minutes instead of at Bondi where it runs full. Mackenzies Bay between Bondi and Tamarama only has sand a few months a year — if it is there, it is a beach that comes and goes. At Bronte swim in the Baths at the south end, not the bogey hole, and do not swim the Bronte Express rip in the middle of the beach. In late October and early November Sculpture by the Sea puts 100,000 people on this path: the same walk at 07:00 is empty and the sculptures are all still there.
12 min by train or taxi · 7.4 km - 10:30 am4Waverley Cemetery boardwalk, then snorkel the Clovelly channelSydney
The clifftop boardwalk through Waverley Cemetery is the prettiest 500 metres of the whole route and half the walkers cut inland and miss it — it closes for storm repairs occasionally, and the detour up Trafalgar Street is signposted when it does. Clovelly is the swim to plan around: a narrow concrete-sided inlet, flat when everything else is churning, with resident blue gropers that come to look at you. Hire a mask at the kiosk if you are not carrying one. Go at high tide for depth, and never at the mouth on a big swell — the surge in that channel is stronger than it looks. Gordons Bay, five minutes further, has an underwater nature trail if you have time and your own gear.
19 min walk · 1.5 km - 11:55 am5Wylie's Baths on the ocean rocksSydney
Everyone finishes at Coogee Beach; the finish is actually 400 m past it. Wylie's is a 1907 tidal pool on the rocks, entry about ten dollars, timber deck, and the water has whatever the ocean sent it that morning — seaweed, small fish, sometimes an octopus in the corner. Lower tide means shallower and warmer. The women-only McIvers Baths next door is the other one, cash donation at the gate.
10 min walk · 800 m - 12:50 pm6Late lunch upstairs at the Coogee PavilionSydney
Ground floor is families and ping-pong; the rooftop is 18+ and has the view. No bookings for small groups on the roof, so arrive before one on a weekend or you will wait 40 minutes. If it is heaving, A Fish Called Coogee does fish and chips two minutes away and you eat them on the grass.
3 min walk · 250 m - 2:30 pm7Bus 373 back to town, shower, changeSydney
Tap on with a credit card or phone — no Opal card needed, and the daily cap applies to contactless the same way. The 373 runs Coogee to the CBD; the X73 is the express in peak. Do not try to do this walk and then drive: parking at both ends is metered, patrolled and full by nine.
10 min by train or taxi · 5.9 km - 6:45 pm8Dinner at Firedoor, everything over woodSydney
No gas, no electricity in the kitchen — every plate comes off wood, and the fish is dry-aged for days before it gets near a fire. Bookings open about two months ahead and the counter seats facing the fire are released at the same time; take those over a table. If you cannot get in, Porteno two streets over does whole animals on the asado from midday and keeps a walk-in bar, and the Dolphin Hotel's wine room takes walk-ins until late. Budget for the chef's menu with a glass — this is the day's one big spend.
