  1. 7 am1
Check Highway 1 before you turn the keyCarmel-by-the-Sea

Not optional, and not a formality. Highway 1 reopened through Big Sur in January 2026 after years of slip closures, and by that August the Timber Fire had shut it again. WHERE THE LINE IS NOW, verified 2026-09-06: the northern closure that ran from mile marker 56 (south of the Little Sur River) down to mile marker 45 (just south of the Big Sur post office) was LIFTED IN ITS ENTIRETY at 06:00 on Thursday 3 September 2026, reopening roughly forty miles of coastal Monterey County for the Labor Day weekend. So the stretch this day uses — Bixby, the Big Sur valley, Nepenthe, Pfeiffer Beach, and south as far as McWay — is OPEN. What is still closed is the southern segment: CHP is holding a hard closure from MM 16.0 at Pacific Valley down to MM 0.0 at the Monterey/San Luis Obispo county line for the Plaskett Fire, with no reopening date. That means this day works as an out-and-back from Carmel and NOT as a through-drive to Cambria or San Simeon — if your plan was to carry on south to Hearst Castle, it does not exist today and the detour is inland via US 101. The road being open is not the same as the parks being open; see the next stops. Ten minutes on QuickMap before you turn the key still decides whether today is this day or a different one.

Bixby Creek Bridge before the light is upBig Sur

Fifteen miles south of Carmel and the reason to leave in the dark. Park in the pull-out on the north side and walk back onto Old Coast Road for the angle everybody recognises. By ten there are forty cars and a queue for it. Verified 2026-09-06: Bixby is a Caltrans pull-out, not a state park, it sits north of the burn, and this stretch of Highway 1 reopened on 3 September — so this stop stands while most of the rest of the day's did not.

Point Sur Light Station from the roadBig Sur

The lighthouse itself only opens for guided walks on set days, so treat it as a viewpoint unless you have booked one. The volcanic rock it sits on is the best-looking thing on this stretch and costs nothing to look at. CORRECTED 2026-09-06: Point Sur State Historic Park is CLOSED until further notice after the Timber Fire, so there are no guided walks to book at all right now — the 'unless you have booked one' half of this note is currently dead. The rock is still there from the road, which is all this stop was ever really for.

Pfeiffer Big Sur is CLOSED — the morning you get insteadBig Sur

REWRITTEN 2026-09-06. This stop used to read '$10 a vehicle, the Valley View and Buzzard's Roost trails, the only place on the coast with shade, water and a lavatory'. California State Parks has Pfeiffer Big Sur CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE after the Timber Fire, along with Point Sur, Andrew Molera, Julia Pfeiffer Burns and Limekiln — the road reopened on 3 September but the parks did not, and there is no announced reopening date. Do not drive to the entrance station expecting to pay ten dollars and walk into redwoods. The honest replacement, given the day still needs somewhere to put six hours before the light is right at the beach: do Point Lobos State Natural Reserve BEFORE you leave the Carmel end in the morning — it sits well north of the burn and was not on the closure list, though I did not confirm its status, so check parks.ca.gov the morning you go. Failing that, the Big Sur valley's own businesses reopened with the highway on 3 September, so the bakery, the Henry Miller library end of the valley and a long lunch absorb the morning without needing a park gate. Check the Big Sur area alerts page on parks.ca.gov before you build a morning around any of this; these closures are being lifted piecemeal.

Lunch at Nepenthe, on the terraceBig Sur

Open since 1949 and still the best 800 feet of view you can buy with a hamburger. No reservations — put your name in and wait at the fire pit, which is the intended experience rather than a failure of one. The Phoenix shop below it is where the queue actually goes.

McWay Falls is CLOSED — turn round at Nepenthe insteadBig Sur

REWRITTEN 2026-09-06. The falls are an eighty-foot drop onto a beach you are not allowed to walk on, seen from a quarter-mile paved trail through a tunnel under the highway — and the overlook trail, the tunnel and the parking lot are all inside Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, which is CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE after the Timber Fire. Highway 1 itself is open past the park, which is exactly the trap: you can drive to the gate and find it shut, and the old advice in this entry to 'park in the lot rather than the highway shoulder' now points at a locked lot, leaving the shoulder — which is a genuine hazard and is ticketed — as the only place to stop. Do not do it. The honest version of this afternoon is to turn round at Nepenthe, which reopened with the highway on 3 September, and take the extra hour at Pfeiffer Beach below. If you are reading this after the parks reopen, the old stop was right and the $10 vehicle fee applied — check the Big Sur alerts page on parks.ca.gov.

Pfeiffer Beach, for the keyholeBig Sur

The whole reason this day is dated in December. Sunset light only passes through Keyhole Rock for a few weeks either side of the solstice, when the sun sets far enough south — come in July and you get a nice beach and no beam. Sycamore Canyon Road is two miles of single track with no sign on Highway 1 (it is the only paved left turn between the Big Sur post office and Nepenthe), a gate that shuts at sunset, and a cash kiosk. The purple sand is real; it is manganese garnet washing out of the cliff. Verified 2026-09-06, and this is the stop that saves the day: Los Padres National Forest is under a Timber Fire emergency closure (Monterey Ranger District order 05-07-51-26-10, effective 29 August 2026) that shuts the roads and trails of the fire area — but the order is written 'except Pfeiffer Beach and Sycamore Canyon Road', so this specific stop is explicitly carved out and OPEN while the state parks around it are not. One new restriction that comes with the carve-out: on Sycamore Canyon Road you must stay INSIDE A MOTOR VEHICLE for the whole two and a half miles from Highway 1 to the day-use area, so parking short and walking in — which people do when the small lot fills — is now prohibited. The $15 cash-only vehicle fee is right; an America the Beautiful or Forest Adventure Pass is accepted instead, and there is a self-registration station when the kiosk is unstaffed. Gate hours were reported to me as 09:00-20:00 daily but I could not confirm that against the Forest Service, so treat the closing time as unverified and do not be the car still inside at dusk.

A room at Post Ranch, and dinner at Sierra MarBig Sur

The honest number: rooms start around $2,175 a night and January weeknights average more, so this is roughly $1,090 a head for two and it is the single most expensive stop in this whole library. What you are buying is a cliff-edge room with no television and the Sierra Mar dining room, which is open to non-guests by reservation only if you would rather have the dinner and sleep in Carmel — that version of this day costs a tenth as much and loses only the morning. Spot-checked 2026-09-06: Post Ranch Inn and Nepenthe were both evacuated during the Timber Fire in August, CAL FIRE reported no structure damage, and Big Sur's hotels and restaurants began reopening on 21 August with the rest following the highway reopening on 3 September. So this stop stands. The $2,175 starting rate was NOT re-verified in this pass and post-fire pricing may have moved — confirm on postranchinn.com when you book, and confirm Sierra Mar is seating non-guests again before you plan the cheaper sleep-in-Carmel version.
